Slow Journalism is gearing up to release An Answer for Everything this week, featuring 200 questions we’ve all been asking, paired with eye-catching and informative infographics.
“We live in a time where objectivity is at risk,” said Rob Orchard, director of The Slow Journalism Company and co-author of Answers for Everything, a new infographic-filled book. “The idea that people have their own ‘truths’ and ‘alternative facts’ is dangerous, especially when combined with the polarization of societies and the immediacy of social media connectivity.” As a result, we’re bombarded with opinions but don’t have a few concrete facts to hold on to, says Orchard.
This prompted Orchard to work with Christian Tate and Marcus Webb – the team behind Delayed Gratification – to create a new book, which they say presents the facts in an “objective but entertaining way”. From low-threshold questions: “Which is better, a cat or a dog?” With climate change, war, violence and disease, “the stakes here couldn’t be higher,” says Orchard.

Creatively, there were many challenges in the project. “Thanks to the pandemic, we were working completely remotely for the first time, so we had to put in place new workflows, new technologies and new ways of thinking and testing ideas,” says Orchard. Besides producing 320 pages of infographics and four issues of their magazine, the work “almost broke them,” he says. They had never published a book before, just magazines, so they realized there were creative differences between the two of them that they hadn’t thought of. “You still need a flow of silly and serious stories, but you have more room to play,” says Orchard. “An infographic crammed into two pages of a magazine turned into an eight-page all-singing, all-dancing book!”
Gathering inspiration for the project, the team looked to each other, referencing their passions, to see if the data could answer questions they’d been thinking about for years. Questions: What is the best novel of all time? Or who is the greatest athlete? What do most people die of in soap operas? “Sometimes we let the questions—determining what’s the best thing since sliced bread, whether there are fish in the sea, and what love has to do with it—have been interesting creative challenges.” They also delved into “interesting data sets to see what kind of stories emerge.” For example, they asked the UN about which country has 39 chickens per person. Illustrated and designed by Tate, the book’s infographics are clear and easy to read, meaning they’re intentionally accessible. But that doesn’t mean they don’t have personality and game. The attractive red hardcover has flip pages dotted with detailed information about each question: you could spend countless hours scanning the infographics with color illustrations alongside relevant information. The data was quite interesting.
