FORT GORDON, Ga. – Cyber Command plans to add more direct officers after the first two were appointed recently as part of a five-year pilot to strengthen the growing force.

Since October, nearly 250 applicants have applied for the CyberDirect launch program, which allows talented civilians to become officers quickly.
Those who qualify have the option of enlisting as first lieutenants, with the possibility of a higher rank in the near future, pending a decision by Congress. Up to $65,000 in student loan repayments during the initial three-year term is also available to attract desirable applicants.
“The cyber field is growing at a rate that is truly unseen in traditional military career fields,” said Brig. General Neil Hersey, commanding officer of the cyber school here. “We believe it is important to use the capabilities provided by the private sector to make our forces better prepared and capable against the adversaries we will face now and in the future.”
Most applicants fall into one of four categories, including prior service military personnel, government employees and contractors, private sector workers and academics.

Desired skills and qualifications include experience in cybersecurity, software or hardware engineering, or product management. A four-year degree or higher in computer science or a related field such as data science or industrial control systems is also required.
At least seven applicants have been recommended by the board for the program. The board plans to reconvene in a few weeks to discuss additional applicants who could one day protect the network.
“We need to have a very technically skilled workforce to be able to do this and stay ahead of what’s coming,” Hersey said.

In 2008, Guzmán left after serving in military intelligence to pursue higher education and eventually work in information technology and cyber security at major US and international companies. When he heard about the program, he decided to sign up and do something more meaningful to him.
“Commercially, you work for that one organization and maybe help their bottom line or keep certain systems online,” he said. “You’re keeping the United States online, you’re protecting its people, and you’re creating something that really makes a difference in the world.”
Those selected for the program are assigned upon arrival to a six-week direct commissioning course at Fort Benning, Georgia, which trains applicants to .
After completing the quick launch course, there is a more career-specific 12-week Cyberspa Foundation Leadership Course. Once a secret clearance is obtained, officers are then eligible for additional training.

Hennessey, a former signals intelligence analyst turned cryptographic network warfare operator in the US, is working on a master’s degree in computer science.
“With my science background, I really want to help soldiers who may not have the same background,” he said. “I think that’s the part that I can help to develop. And any opportunity I get to roll up my sleeves and write some code and create some algorithms is something I’ll enjoy as well.”
The latest program was developed in an effort to strengthen its role in the cyber domain, which senior leaders say will be central to its future warfare concept: multi-domain operations.
In early 2017, Cyber also sponsored the Civilian Cyberspace Impact Career Program for current and future government employees. Last year, leaders decided to move the 29th Series Electronic Warfare Soldier to the 17th Cyber Career Field by the end of this fiscal year.

“We always have to be on our toes,” Hersey said of the career field. “As we know, attackers have an advantage in cyber. They only have to be right once. As defenders, we have to be right every time.
“To that end, we’re working on initiatives like the direct launch pilot program so we’re better and better prepared to answer the call when things like this happen.” Army Sgt. Maj. Commissioned officers are the highest rank in the military. These officers hold presidential commissions and are confirmed in their ranks by the Senate. Military officers in the ranks of O-1 through O-3 are called company officers; Recipients from O-4 to O-6 are known as field grade officers, and those in grades O-7 and above are known as general officers.

He applied as a colonel. Typically commands a brigade-sized unit (3,000-5,000 troops) with the CSM as the chief non-commissioned officer. Also identified as agency head of divisional level staff.
Addressed as General. Served as Deputy Commandant General of the Army Division. Assist in mission planning and coordination by the crew.
Addressed as General. Senior level certified officers typically have more than 30 years of experience and service. Direct all activities included in their geographic area. The Army Chief is a four-star general.
This is only used in times of war when the commander must be of the same or higher rank than the other nation’s troops. The last officer to hold this rank served during and immediately after World War II.
